WARTS IN MEN

Why do warts occur in men?

Warts in men are typically benign lesions on the skin and mucous membranes caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). They can be divided into several different types. The type of wart that is sexually transmitted and generally seen around the sexual organs and anus is called a genital wart. However, they can also occur in other parts of the body, such as hand warts and foot warts.

There are annually 250,000 new cases of genital warts in men in the United States. HPV is a sexually transmitted virus that is most commonly spread through men. It is known to be closely associated with Type 6 and Type 11, which make up 90% of genital warts in men. This virus can spread during sexual intercourse, close skin-to-skin contact, or shared objects. Moreover, it can also be contracted in public places like swimming pools, showers, and saunas.

Genital warts are usually located in the anal area, penis, scrotum, inner thighs, or groin. Warts are usually flesh-colored, hard, and rough, and they may sometimes take on a cauliflower shape. In some cases, they can be painful or itchy. People are at a higher risk of contracting HPV when they are sexually active, have multiple sexual partners, have another sexually transmitted infection, or have a weakened immune system.

There is not yet a full consensus on the progression of HPV infection in men. However, one study has shown that it takes an average of 5.9 months for the virus to be completely eliminated from the body. Additionally, it has been found that HPV was not present in 75% of men's bodies after a year. The likelihood of the virus being eliminated from the body does not differ depending on the type of HPV, with high-risk types being eliminated over a longer period. The virus is most commonly found in the root of the penis, the glans penis, and the groin area.

Warts can usually be diagnosed by physical examination. In doubtful cases, a biopsy can be taken from the wart, and an HPV DNA test can be performed.

The best way to protect against HPV is safe sex and the HPV vaccine. Regular medical check-ups are also important. Some HPV types, particularly Type 16 and Type 18, can cause types of cancer such as penile cancer and oropharyngeal cancers. Therefore, you should always consider the possibility of having high-risk HPV to protect both yourself and your partner.

Lastly, healthy lifestyle changes can help protect against HPV infection by strengthening the immune system. These changes include quitting smoking, not irritating the genital area, eating healthily, and regular exercise.

Wart Treatment in Men

The treatment of warts in men aims at the complete disappearance of the wart and its replacement with healthy tissue. During this process, a critical point is to ensure minimal damage to the surrounding healthy tissue while the wart tissue is effectively destroyed. There are several options for wart treatment, which we will now discuss in detail.

Wart Treatment with Laser Method:

Laser treatment for warts is often preferred in managing genital warts. This technique utilizes laser technology that can provide precise focusing on the targeted tissue. This precise focusing prevents damage to the surrounding healthy tissue and accelerates the healing process. Laser treatment is usually less painful under local anesthesia and patients typically can return to their normal lives within a few days. The laser method of treatment can coagulate blood vessels, minimizing bleeding during and after the operation. This treatment can be particularly effective on warts in hard-to-reach parts of the body or warts of a large size.

Wart Treatment with Radiofrequency Method:

The radiofrequency method generates thermal energy in the target tissue by converting electrical current into radiofrequency waves. This thermal energy heats up tissue cells, which disrupts the structure of proteins and leads to cell death. Radiofrequency offers less peripheral tissue damage, less scarring, and less postoperative pain risk compared to electrocautery and cryotherapy.

Wart Treatment with Cryotherapy Method:

Cryotherapy is a treatment method that works on the principle of freezing the target tissue. It is often used in the treatment of skin lesions, warts, and some skin cancers. The freezing process causes the cell membrane to tear and leads to cell death. However, pain can occur during treatment and it may not be suitable for treating a large number of genital or anal warts.

Wart Treatment with Electrocauterization Method:

Electrocautery is a method in which electrical energy burns away warts. However, this treatment can lead to burn scars or changes in skin color. It can also cause pain during and after treatment.

Wart Treatment with Surgical Method:

In some cases, the warts may have spread over a large area or formed a tumor-like structure. In such situations, the warts may need to be surgically removed. This procedure is usually performed under local or general anesthesia.

Prices for Wart Treatment in Men

The cost of wart treatment in men can vary depending on various factors. These factors include the number of warts, their extent, location, and the type of anesthesia used during treatment. It is also important to remember that the cost may be affected if an HPV test and HPV vaccination are carried out during the treatment process.
