What is Wart Removal?

Wart removal is a medical procedure used to treat warts. Warts are benign lesions that occur in the upper layer of the skin, mostly caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Wart removal provides a treatment method to directly treat and eliminate these lesions.

The term "burning" denotes one of several methods used in this treatment process:

  • Laser treatment: The laser clears the wart by destroying the wart cells on the skin surface. This method is usually effective in treating deeper warts and is typically less painful. However, laser treatment is generally costly and not available everywhere.
  • Electrocautery: This method burns the wart using an electric current, thereby preventing the virus from multiplying. Electrocautery is usually quick and effective, but there can be slight pain and a burning sensation after treatment. Also, there may be residual marks on the skin after electrocautery, but these marks generally fade over time.
  • Cryotherapy: In this case, "burning" is actually the process of freezing the skin surface. Cryotherapy works by freezing and thawing the warts using liquid nitrogen. It is usually quick and effective, but there can be pain during the freezing process, and color change can be permanent after the procedure.
  • Radiofrequency treatment: This method allows the wart to be destroyed by burning using high-frequency radio waves. Radiofrequency treatment is generally quick, causes minimal pain, and the recovery time is shorter than electrocautery.

How is Wart Removal Done?

The wart removal process may vary depending on the technology used. But generally, the following steps are followed:

  • First, the patient and the health professional decide on which burning method will be used. This decision generally depends on the type, size, and location of the wart, and the patient's overall health status.
  • The wart removal process is usually performed in an examination room environment and typically local anesthesia is applied. Anesthesia is applied in the form of a cream or an injection.
  • When the wart removal process starts, energy is applied to the wart. This energy may be electric (electrocautery), laser (laser treatment), cold (cryotherapy), or radio frequency waves (radiofrequency treatment).
  • The applied energy destroys the wart and the HPV virus underneath. This stops the virus from multiplying and allows the wart to disappear.
  • After the procedure, the treatment area is usually left open. If the base of the wart is very wide, it can be covered to prevent infection.
  • The healing time varies depending on the method used and the size of the wart. Healing is quick in laser and radiofrequency methods, slower in electrocautery and cryotherapy methods.
  • There may be pain or discomfort after the procedure, depending on the method applied. Electrocautery method is more painful compared to other methods. Also, there may be potential side effects such as temporary color change, scarring, or risk of infection in the treatment area. Color change is most often seen after cryotherapy.
  • It is important for the patient to follow all care instructions until the wart fully heals.
  • In laser, radiofrequency, and electrocautery wart removal procedures, warts are completely eliminated in a single session. However, with cryotherapy, multiple treatment sessions are required.
