COLPOSCOPY

kolposkopi nedir

What is Colposcopy?

Colposcopy is a procedure to closely examine the cervix and the vagina with a microscope. During this process, we dye the cervix with certain dyes. After the dyeing, if there are areas indicating issues, we take biopsies and samples from these areas and send them to a pathology laboratory for microscopic examination.

Who Needs Colposcopy?

  • If you test positive for HPV 16 and HPV 18
  • If you test positive for HPV types 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 54, 56, 58 with abnormal smear test results
  • If there is bleeding after sexual intercourse
  • If there are precancerous lesions on the cervix
  • If the smear test result is inconsistent with the HPV test, colposcopy is needed.

How is Colposcopy Performed?

  • Colposcopy can be easily done under examination room conditions.
  • Anesthesia is not needed.
  • The patient needs to be in the gynecological examination position.
  • A device called a speculum is inserted into the vagina to examine the cervix and vagina.
  • The cervix and vagina are carefully examined with a microscope, especially looking for cellular changes.
  • 5% acetic acid is applied to the cervix to identify certain areas and is left on. Areas showing cellular changes turn white.
  • If potential risky areas are identified, biopsies are taken from these areas. The biopsy procedure is generally painless.
  • Lugol's solution is applied to the cervix.
  • The biopsy samples are sent to a pathology expert.
  • Pathological results are used to determine the patient's treatment and follow-up protocol.

Is Colposcopy a Painful Procedure?

Colposcopy is usually a painless procedure. However, if a biopsy is needed, a slight pain may be felt. This is generally a bearable pain and usually does not require anesthesia or numbing.

When are Colposcopy Results Available?

Colposcopy results can usually be obtained immediately. However, if a biopsy has been taken, these samples are sent to the pathology laboratory, and the results are usually received within a week.

How is the Colposcopy Result Interpreted?

  • If no abnormal findings are detected in the colposcopy results, no intervention is needed until the patient's next HPV test check-up.
  • If the biopsy result identifies CIN 1, this usually does not pose a serious problem and the same procedures are repeated a year later.
  • If the results are CIN 2 or CIN 3, a LEEP procedure may be applied to the patient.
  • If carcinoma in situ or invasive cancer is detected, the patient is referred to a Gynecologic Oncology Specialist and surgical treatment can be planned.
