LEEP

What is LEEP (Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure)?

LEEP is a medical procedure used to treat tissue changes in the cervix associated with the human papillomavirus (HPV). This treatment method is applied, especially when precancerous cellular changes are detected. The LEEP procedure uses an electrosurgical device to remove a piece of tissue from the cervix using electrical energy.

This procedure is performed with a loop electrode mounted on the electrosurgical device. This makes a carefully planned circular cut to remove potentially harmful cells and tissue areas. An advantage of the procedure is that it burns while cutting the tissue. This significantly reduces the likelihood of bleeding during the procedure. Even in the case of bleeding, the electrosurgical device can stop the bleeding by burning the bleeding area.

This procedure is usually done in an operating room environment, and there is no severe pain felt after the procedure. After the LEEP procedure, the removed tissue is sent to a pathology laboratory. Here, the tissue is examined for a more detailed examination and an accurate diagnosis. The patient can be discharged on the same day the procedure is performed. There should not be excessive bleeding, but if it happens, it would be appropriate to inform your doctor.

What Should Be Taken Into Consideration After LEEP Procedure?

After the LEEP procedure, it is necessary to refrain from certain activities for a certain period of time. In particular, it is recommended not to have sexual intercourse or use vaginal tampons for the first 4 weeks after the operation. During the same period, activities in the pool or sea should also be avoided. It is not a problem to take a shower standing up immediately after the procedure.
