CONIZATION

What is Conization?

Conization is a medical procedure used to treat tissue changes in the cervix associated with HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). This term is often referred to as cold conization, and can sometimes be used to refer to the LEEP procedure, however technically LEEP and conization are different procedures. This treatment method is especially applied in situations where precancerous cellular changes have been detected. The conization procedure uses a special surgical knife to remove a piece of tissue from the cervix.

This process makes a carefully planned conical cut to remove the tissue. There may be some bleeding during the procedure, but this can be quickly and effectively controlled with stitches. The procedure is usually performed in the operating room under general anesthesia.

Following conization, the removed tissue is sent to a pathology laboratory. Here, the tissue is examined for a more detailed examination and correct diagnosis. The patient can usually be discharged on the day of the procedure. However, in the event of excessive bleeding, it is important to inform your doctor immediately.

What to Watch Out For After Conization?

After the cold conization procedure, some activities should be avoided for a certain period of time. For the first 4 weeks after the procedure, sexual intercourse should not be had and vaginal tampons should not be used. Also during the same period, activities like swimming in the pool or sea should be avoided. Taking a shower standing up after the procedure does not pose a problem.
